As the SCBWI-NE Annual Conference approaches, I find myself
revisiting friends, faces and experiences from past events. Among the people I
won’t be seeing this year are Ruth Glass and Ann Barrow.
On July 10, 2005, after a long and courageous battle,
artist, writer and long time critique group leader, Ruth Landers Glass, passed
away. With her death, SCBWI-NE lost one of it’s staunchest supporters and I
personally lost a woman I considered a great friend and an invaluable advisor. Ruth
not only had a love of writing, but a love for writers themselves. She was
passionate about supporting them, informing them and helping them become the
best that they could be.
While Ruth and Ann are no longer with us, their legacy of
support and group contribution lives on. In honor of their vital additions to
SCBWI-NE and their unflagging support for their fellow artists and writers, the
SCBWI-NE Memory Fund has been established with the goal of providing one
writer’s and one illustrator’s scholarship to the SCBWI-NE Annual Spring
Conference. For more information, or contribute to the SCBWI-NE Memory Fund
